Lapin Looper

Lapin Looper

Live looping guitar from Montréal, built one layer at a time.

The Lapin Looper mechanical hare, in brass and bone.

What this is

The solo project of Vincent Cantin Bellemare. Loops: a guitar, a bass, Ableton Live, a Push. Everything is built live, one layer over the last, until it stands up on its own.

The writing happens in the studio. The videos are shot all over the Montréal area — the living room wall has done its time.

The AI does the set. The rabbit plays.

I use artificial intelligence for the images and the video, never for the music. Every loop is played, with my fingers, with the mistakes that come with it.

The workshop

Notes on how it gets built. What worked, what cost too much, and what had to be done over.

  • Animating the hare

Five seconds that close exactly on themselves, for twenty cents. And what the measurements couldn't see.

  • How a clip gets made

From the audio file to the published clip: the eight steps, in order, and the three moments where only the ear can decide.
